From Ellie Goulding to Taylor Swift: All the celebs Ed Sheeran could have ended up with before getting engaged to childhood pal Cherry Seaborn

“I always thought I’d end up dating an actress or something – someone in that industry – but I don’t think I’m that kind of person. I’m a hometown boy,” Ed quite rightly predicted.

He might have crooned on smash hit Perfect how he’s found a girl ‘beautiful and sweet’ but the path to true love has not been easy for Ed Sheeran – even if his past flings have provided him with some excellent songwriting content along the way.

A look back through Ed’s chequered dating history reveals the singer has had many a failed showbiz romance before finally returning to first crush Cherry Seaborn – who’ll be the sole focus of his slushy ballads forever more.

We take a trip down Memory Lane to see which famous faces Ed could have ended up with had he never reached out to his childhood friend at the peak of his career.

Ellie Goulding

Ed was introduced to Ellie Goulding via mutual friend Taylor Swift and the song-writers seemed like the perfect match on paper, but things didn’t go quite to plan.

After their romance hit the skids, Ed appeared to reveal all through bitter break-up single ‘Don’t’ – which fans reckon is about Ellie and Niall Horan.

The song details how a ‘singer ex’ cheated on him with a pal in the same hotel they were all staying at, while he was downstairs.

“The story in Don’t is 100% true. I could have gotten nastier – there was more s*** that I didn’t put in,” Ed revealed.

Lyrics to the track include: “I never saw him as a threat, ’til you disappeared with him to have sex,” and “If I show courtesy and respect to someone, I expect to receive it.”

While Ellie initially tried to play down rumours of a romance with the ginger one, the pair were pictured looked very cosy holding hands at the MTV awards.

Taylor Swift

Just good friends?

From one guitar-playing blonde to another, Ed has also been romantically linked to his BFF Taylor Swift multiple times over the years.

Back in 2013 the Snakey One invited Ed on her Red tour where they are said to have enjoyed many a wild night on the road.

If anything did happen, the pair soon moved past it as they’ve remained loyal pals and collaborators ever since – with Ed even appearing on Taylor’s latest single End Game.

But eagle-eyed fans have noticed song Dress, also from Taylor’s album Reputation, seems to give a special mention to Ed and his hit Shape Of You.

“They’ve got no idea bout me and you. There is an indentation in the shape of you,” sings Taylor.

Nina Nesbitt

After debut album + propelled him to superstardom back in 2011, Ed caught the eye of Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt.

The pair got close with him writing the not-so-subtlety titled ‘Nina’ on his next chart-topping album X about her.

“He warned me it was happening but I didn’t know it was going on the album,” Nina told the Daily Record following their split. “I knew there was a song. I’m not really bothered.

“It was quite a long time ago and it’s a good song.

“I have written quite a few songs about Ed that are on the Peroxide album and people can probably guess which ones. I’m not going to go into detail about it but we are both songwriters, so naturally we were going to write songs about each other.”

Athina Andrelos

Ed also enjoyed a year-long romance with Athina Andrelos in 2014, a relative unknown who works as a producer for celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

However the relationship broke down after reports that his heavy touring schedule had taken its toll .

Ed even told The Sun that his infamous boozy Brit Awards was a reaction to the split from Athina.

“My relationship ended that night. That was a knee-jerk reaction… Every artist keeps composed in public. Every single one of us puts up a front.

“There’s always something going on behind the scenes.”

Taylor Swift’s Girl Squad

Ed Sheeran reveals he’s slept with some of Taylor Swift’s squad

While we can only guess the exact identities of these dalliances, Ed previously bragged about how he’d slept with some of Taylor Swift’s girl squad.

The flame-haired crooner said he couldn’t believe his luck when he went on tour with Taylor from 2013-14, to find the famous ladies were keen to get a piece of him.

Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone , Ed lifted the lid on his then prolific love life, which blossomed thanks to his Taylor’s harem of female pals.

“I was this 22 year old awkward British kid going on tour with the biggest artist in America, who has all these famous mates.

“It was very easy. I would often find myself in situations just kind of waking up and looking over and being like, ‘How the f**k did that happen?”

But ever the gentleman, Ed declined to name his conquests.

But who else was in Taylor’s squad at the time? She was mates in this period with Selena Gomez, Hailee Steinfeld, Lena Dunham, Lorde, Cara Delevinge, Lily Aldrige, Martha Hunt, Sarah Hyland, Jaime King, Dianna Agron from Glee and probably a lot more people that she didn’t Instagram so no-one’s pointing any fingers at all.

And the one that won Ed’s heart

After finding zero success dating a string of famous ladies, Ed found love in the arms of his childhood friend Cherry Seaborn.

Speaking about how he’d finally got things right this time, Ed told Radio 2 he’d taken his time to fall in love with Cherry.

“I spent every day for a year with this certain person, we kind of have a strong relationship now which is good.

“I’m really secure now, we live together and we have cats, and I think when you have cats that’s kind of it.”

Ed announced their engagement with an adorable Instagram post over the weekend – adding they were both ‘very happy and in love.’
