Football stars across the world take their families to social media and welcome in 2018

Sports stars have been seeing in the New Year with loved ones and family across the globe, posting their celebrations to Instagram.

Among them were the world’s two leading footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who will hope to continue their dominance of the game in 2018.Ronaldo will have to go some to top a 2017 where he won the Champions League, La Liga, a fifth Ballon D’Or, and became a father to three more children.

The Real Madrid star celebrated New Year with his mother, father and sisters, and posed with a cake iced with the world ‘Parabens’ – Portuguese for congratulations. He also shared a pic of him with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.Messi meanwhile saw in the year with extended family, wife Antonella Roccuzzo – who he married in June 2017 – by his side.His former Barcelona team mate, Neymar, also used New Year to demonstrate his love for family, posting a picture of him sat with his son Davi on a boat, captioned ‘my best friend’.

It was a less glamorous night for MMA star Conor McGregor – who helped provide one of 2017’s most abiding sports memories with his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather – who said that ‘half the family’, including himself, were struck down with the Australian flu virus.In a lengthy Instagram message, McGregor wrote: ‘One of the most intense few days I’ve gone through. Big New Year’s Eve party cancelled at the last minute and I am left shaking in bed past two days.’However, he resolved to ‘leave that with the rest of the bad behind me in 2017’, as he took a picture with his baby son, Conor jnr, before signing off with a warning: ‘Be sharp and be fast this year because I am sharper and faster’.

New Year also saw team mates come together, with Manchester City and Argentina colleagues Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero celebrating with their combined families.Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic also kept family close, looking loved up in an embrace with his wife, Raquel Mauri.

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard also saw in the year with family, namely his three footballer brothers – Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Thorgan, Chelsea reserves star Kylian, and his youngest sibling Ethan.The Hazard four each posed with a numbered balloon, spelling 2018, while team mate Alvaro Morata wore his own party prop – a pair of novelty, oversized, golden glasses.

On the continent, there were some classy celebrations to say goodbye to 2017 – Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski standing by a pool wearing a tuxedo, wife Anna on his arm. Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas shared an arty black and white photo of him with his spouse, Sara Carbonero.One player glad to say goodbye to 2017 is Leicester midfielder Adrien Silva. He is now finally able to play for the Foxes after his registration was submitted 14 seconds after the deadline in the summer.Silva celebrated with his family, as did Everton’s Kevin Mirallas, wearing a fetching red jacket – appropriate for a man hoping to star for Belgium in the 2018 World Cup.
